Understanding the Hijri (Islamic) Calendar

The Hijri calendar (التقويم الهجري) is a purely lunar calendar consisting of 12 synodic lunar months in a year of 354 or 355 days. It is used across the Islamic world to determine the correct days of Islamic holidays, Ramadan fasting, Hajj pilgrimage, and religious observances.

The calendar began in 622 CE, marking the Hijrah — the emigration of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina. Dates in the Hijri calendar are designated with AH (Latin: Anno Hegirae, "In the year of the Hijrah").

Sunset Rule (Maghrib)

In Islamic tradition, a new day begins at sunset (Maghrib), not at midnight. If an event occurs after sunset on a Tuesday evening, its Hijri date belongs to Wednesday. Tick the "After Sunset / Maghrib" box to convert evening dates accurately.

12 Lunar Months

A Hijri year is 10 to 12 days shorter than a Gregorian solar year. This is why Islamic months like Ramadan cycle backwards through all four seasons over a 33-year cycle.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Hijri year is calculated from 622 CE (the year of the Hijrah). Our converter uses mathematical astronomical formulas (Kuwaiti / Umm al-Qura algorithm) for precise alignment across all dates.
Some Islamic countries determine month start dates based on physical crescent moon sighting (Ru'yat al-Hilal). Astronomical calculations provide the mathematical standard, but physical sighting can occasionally shift a date by 1 day.
AH stands for Anno Hegirae in Latin, which translates to "In the year of the Hijrah". In Arabic, it is designated with the letter هـ.
In Islamic timekeeping, the new day starts at Maghrib (sunset), not midnight. If an event occurs after sundown, checking the "After Sunset / Maghrib" box advances the converted Hijri date by 1 day.
A Hijri year contains 12 lunar months, total 354 or 355 days. This makes a Hijri year about 10 to 12 days shorter than a Gregorian solar year.
The 12 months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi' al-Awwal, Rabi' al-Thani, Jumada al-Awwal, Jumada al-Thani, Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qi'dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah. Four of these (Muharram, Rajab, Dhu al-Qi'dah, Dhu al-Hijjah) are sacred months (الأشهر الحرم).
