The 4 Positional Forms of Every Arabic Letter
Arabic is a cursive script — most letters connect to their neighbours inside a word. Each letter has up to four shapes depending on where it sits in the word. Non-connectors (ا د ذ ر ز و) only join on the right, so the letter after them always uses its isolated or initial form.
Isolated (منفرد)
Stands alone or at start after a non-connector.
Initial (أول الكلمة)
Start of a word — connects to the right.
Medial (وسط الكلمة)
Middle of a word — connects on both sides.
Final (آخر الكلمة)
End of a word — connects only to the left.
Solar vs. Lunar Letters — Why "ال" Sounds Different
When the Arabic definite article ال (the) is added to a noun, the "ل" sound either disappears or stays — depending on whether the first letter of that noun is solar or lunar.
The "ل" of ال is assimilated — it disappears and the first letter is doubled. Example: الشمس is pronounced ash-shams, not al-shams.
ت ث د ذ ر ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ل ن
The "ل" of ال is pronounced clearly. Example: القمر is pronounced al-qamar — you can hear the "l".
ا ب ج ح خ ع غ ف ق ك م و ه ي
The word شمس (shams / sun) itself starts with a solar letter. The word قمر (qamar / moon) starts with a lunar letter. The names are self-referencing!

Frequently Asked Questions
How many letters are in the Arabic alphabet?
The Arabic alphabet has 28 letters (حروف الهجاء — Huroof al-Hijaa). They are all consonants or long vowels. Short vowels (فتحة / ضمة / كسرة) are written as small diacritical marks above or below letters and are usually omitted in everyday writing.
Is Arabic written right to left?
Yes. Arabic is written and read from right to left. This applies to text, books, and web pages marked with dir="rtl". However, Arabic numerals (١ ٢ ٣) within text flow right to left while Western numerals (1 2 3) still flow left to right.
What are the hardest Arabic letters for English speakers?
The five most challenging letters for native English speakers are: ع (ʕayn — a deep voiced pharyngeal sound with no English equivalent), غ (Ghayn — a voiced uvular fricative, like a French "r"), خ (Kha — like the "ch" in Scottish "loch"), ح (Ḥa — a voiceless pharyngeal fricative, a breathed "h" from deep in the throat), and ق (Qaf — a "k" sound produced at the back of the throat).
What is the difference between ة (Taa Marbuta) and ت (Taa)?
ت (Taa) is a full letter that appears anywhere in a word. ة (Taa Marbuta — "tied taa") only appears at the end of words and is typically used to mark feminine nouns or adjectives. When the word is said in isolation it sounds like a soft "a" or "h"; when the word continues (e.g., in a sentence with case vowels), it is pronounced "t". Example: مدرسة (madrasa / school) vs طالب (taalib / student, masculine).
How long does it take to learn the Arabic alphabet?
Most motivated beginners can recognise all 28 Arabic letters in 2–4 weeks of daily 15-minute practice. Reading fluently — connecting letters and understanding positional forms in real words — typically takes an additional 1–3 months. Arabic's consistent sound-to-letter mapping makes it considerably more phonetically regular than English once the script is learned.
