How Azubi Taxes and Social Contributions Work in Germany

During an Ausbildung (vocational apprenticeship) in Germany, your monthly gross allowance (Ausbildungsvergütung) is subject to German social security laws. Because apprentices earn less than full-time employees, specific tax-free thresholds and contribution rules apply.

1. Social Security Contributions (Sozialabgaben)

Every Azubi earning over €538 per month pays social security contributions split roughly 50/50 with their employer:

  • Health Insurance (Krankenversicherung - KV): 7.3% base + ~0.85% average additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag) = ~8.15%.
  • Pension Insurance (Rentenversicherung - RV): 9.3% employee contribution (18.6% total split with employer).
  • Unemployment Insurance (Arbeitslosenversicherung - AV): 1.3% employee contribution (2.6% total split with employer).
  • Care Insurance (Pflegeversicherung - PV): 1.7% base for parents, or 2.3% for childless apprentices aged 23+.

2. Income Tax (Lohnsteuer) and Tax-Free Allowance

For 2025/2026, the annual basic tax-free allowance (Grundfreibetrag) is over **€12,084**. As long as your monthly gross allowance stays below roughly **€1,150 to €1,200** (under Tax Class 1 / Steuerklasse 1), your Income Tax (Lohnsteuer) and Solidarity Surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag) will be **€0.00**!

3. Low Income Rule (Geringverdienergrenze €325)

If an Azubi earns less than **€325 gross per month**, the employer pays 100% of all social security contributions, meaning Gross = Net!
