The 5 pinyin rules this quiz drills
1. The hidden ü. After j, q and x, the vowel is always ü but written u: 居 jū, 去 qù, 学 xué. After n and l, the dots stay: 女 nǚ, 绿 lǜ.
2. Aspiration pairs. b/p, d/t, g/k, z/c, zh/ch, j/q differ by a puff of air, not by English voicing. Hold a tissue in front of your mouth: only p, t, k, c, ch, q make it flutter.
3. Tone-mark order. a first, then e, then the o of -ou/-uo. Only -iu and -ui take the mark on the last letter: liú, shuǐ.
4. Zero-initial rewrites. A syllable that is only a vowel gets dressed up: u → wu (五 wǔ), i → yi (一 yī), ü → yu (鱼 yú).
5. The apostrophe guard. 西安 is Xī'ān, not xiān. When a syllable starts with a, e or o mid-word, an apostrophe marks the border.
Pinyin is not English spelling
The most common beginner error is reading pinyin through English: c is not 'k' (it is 'ts' as in cats), q is not 'kw' (it is an aspirated 'ch'), and x is not 'ks' (it is a soft hissed 'sh' with the tongue down). Un-learn the English values for c, q, x, zh and r and Mandarin spelling suddenly becomes regular — almost every syllable is exactly what its letters say in pinyin values.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is pinyin?
Pinyin (拼音, "spelled sounds") is the official romanisation of Mandarin Chinese, used across mainland China for teaching reading, typing Chinese on phones and computers, and showing pronunciation in dictionaries. It uses the Latin alphabet plus four tone marks.
Why is ü sometimes written without the dots?
After j, q and x, only ü can occur — a plain u is impossible there — so pinyin drops the dots to save ink: ju, qu, xu are all ü sounds. After n and l both u and ü exist (路 lù vs 绿 lǜ), so the dots stay to keep words apart.
Is pinyin the same as Wade-Giles?
No. Wade-Giles is an older system (Peking, hsüeh) replaced by pinyin in the 1950s–70s. You still see it in Taiwan place names and old books. This quiz teaches standard Hanyu Pinyin, the system the HSK and modern textbooks use.
Do I need pinyin if I learn characters?
Yes — pinyin is how you look words up, type them, and learn their pronunciation before the character sticks. Even native schoolchildren learn pinyin first, in grade one. Treat it as scaffolding you keep, not a crutch you drop.
What comes after pinyin?
Vocabulary. Take the HSK 1 Vocabulary Quiz for the 150 core words, or the full Chinese Level Test for a level estimate with a verifiable certificate.
Cubbbix practice quizzes are study tools. They are not affiliated with the official HSK, HSKK, YCT, BCT or TOCFL exams, and no certificate is issued for the mini-quizzes — certificates come only from the full Chinese Level Test.
