The 3 number ideas English does not have

1. 万 (wàn) = 10,000. Big numbers group by ten-thousands: 100,000 is 十万 (ten wàn), a million is 一百万. Translate by 万 first or your zeros will wander.

2. 零 (líng) holds empty places. 105 is 一百零五 — the 零 announces the missing tens. Skip it and 105 slurs into 150.

3. Two has two names. 二 (èr) counts in sequence: 二月 February, 第二十 twentieth. 两 (liǎng) counts things with measure words: 两个人 two people, 两本书 two books, 两点 two o'clock.

And the measure words themselves: 本 for books, 张 for flat things, 只 for small animals, 辆 for vehicles, 件 for clothes, 瓶 for bottles. Mandarin counts almost nothing bare — every noun travels with its counter.

Street drill

Numbers stick when they are prices and times, not chants. Read every price tag, bus number and phone number you see today in Chinese. Say 三块五 for the ¥3.50 item, 七点四十 for 7:40. The quiz's phone-number question (1 read as yāo) comes from exactly this street reality — clarity beats elegance on a bad line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Chinese have 万 instead of grouping by thousands?

Chinese (like Japanese and Korean) traditionally groups large numbers by 10,000 (万), then 100 million (亿). It is a different chunking of the same digits: 1,000,000 = 一百万 = "one hundred ten-thousands". Converting through 万 first prevents the classic off-by-a-zero error.

When do I use 两 (liǎng) instead of 二 (èr)?

Use 两 before measure words and in 两点 (2 o'clock) and 两千/两万. Use 二 in pure counting, sequences and compounds: 二十 (20), 二月 (February), 第二 (second), 一百二 (120, colloquial). Both mean two — the job decides the word.

What is a measure word?

A counter that sits between a number and a noun: 一本书 (one [volume] book), 三只猫 (three [small-animal] cats), 一辆车 (one [wheeled] car). English has a shadow of the system — "two sheets of paper", "a head of cattle" — Mandarin simply applies it to everything. The fallback 个 (gè) works everywhere but sounds flat.

How are dates said in Chinese?

Big to small: year, month, day. 2026年10月15号 = October 15, 2026 — year + 年, month + 月, day + 号 (spoken) or 日 (written). Weekdays are 星期 plus a number, Monday = 星期一 through Saturday = 星期六, Sunday = 星期天.

Is this quiz part of the paid certificate?

No. All six mini-quizzes in this Chinese cluster are free practice with no certificate. The verifiable certificate comes only from the full Chinese Level Test ($9.99 after your free result).

Cubbbix practice quizzes are study tools. They are not affiliated with the official HSK, HSKK, YCT, BCT or TOCFL exams, and no certificate is issued for the mini-quizzes — certificates come only from the full Chinese Level Test.
