Code Typing Test

We use the standard formula for typing tests:
(Total Characters Typed / 5) / Time in Minutes.
This means "Words Per Minute" is actually "Blocks of 5 keystrokes per minute", standardizing the metric regardless of how long the variable names or keywords are in the chosen language.

Yes. Proper indentation is a crucial part of writing readable code. You must type the spaces at the beginning of indented lines exactly as they appear in the snippet to proceed.

Because code is heavily dense in symbols, a "good" code WPM is generally lower than standard text WPM.

Currently, our code typing test supports JavaScript, PHP, Python, HTML, CSS, and SQL snippets. We selected these as they are among the most popular and use a wide variety of syntax styles.

Most common text consists only of letters and occasional punctuation. Code makes heavy use of special characters which require shifting or reaching further sections of the keyboard, slowing down average typing patterns unless specifically practiced.

While not strictly necessary (many great developers "hunt-and-peck"), touch typing significantly reduces cognitive load. It allows you to keep your eyes on the screen and your mind focused on the problem, rather than searching for keys.
