How to Convert Decimals to Fractions and Fractions to Decimals

This page is optimized for how to convert decimal to fraction and how to convert fractions to decimals. Use the converter above for instant answers with steps.

Whether you need 1/4 as a decimal, 1/3 as a decimal, or want to turn a decimal into a simplified fraction, this tool handles both directions.

The 3-Step Decimal to Fraction Method

Step 1 Divide by 1

Write the decimal number as a fraction over 1. For example, if your decimal is 0.75, write it as 0.75 / 1.

Step 2 Multiply by Powers of 10

Multiply both the top and bottom of the fraction by 10 for every digit to the right of the decimal point. Since 0.75 has two digits after the decimal point, multiply by 100.

(0.75 × 100) / (1 × 100) = 75 / 100

Step 3 Simplify the Fraction

Find the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) for both the top (numerator) and bottom (denominator). Divide both numbers by this GCD to get the simplest form.

The GCD of 75 and 100 is 25.
(75 ÷ 25) / (100 ÷ 25) = 3 / 4

How to Convert Fractions to Decimals

  1. Take the numerator (top number).
  2. Divide by the denominator (bottom number).
  3. Round if needed for practical use.
1/4 as a decimal = 0.25
1/3 as a decimal = 0.333...
