What is a Duotone Effect?

A "Duotone" is a halftone reproduction of an image that brings out its middle tones and highlights by replacing the entire color spectrum with exactly two distinct colors. Originally a printing technique designed to save ink costs, the effect experienced a massive modern revival when platforms like Spotify began using vibrant, contrasting duotone overlays for their artist pages and playlist covers.

Our tool algorithmically maps every pixel in your image to a new grayscale value based on brightness, then replaces the dark pixels with your chosen "Shadow" color and the bright pixels with your "Highlight" color.

The "Spotify" Filter

Spotify popularized the vibrant two-color filter trend to unify their diverse catalog of artist photography. By applying a cohesive color template (like neon green and dark navy), they created an immediately recognizable brand aesthetic.

Color Theory Matters

For the best results, pick a Highlight color that is bright and neon (like hot pink or cyan) and a Shadow color that is exceptionally dark (like deep navy, dark brown, or black).

Brightness & Contrast

Because this effect maps colors based on the original image's brightness, the pre-adjustment sliders are critical. If your image looks "washed out" or the duotone effect isn't intense enough, bumping up the Contrast slider will often fix it immediately.

100% Private Rendering

We process every single pixel locally. Thanks to HTML5 Canvas technology, your image stays on your device. It is never uploaded to an external server, keeping your artwork and personal photos completely private.
