About This Tool

Welcome to our free online Factor Calculator. Whether you're a student solving algebra equations, simplifying fractions, or simply exploring mathematics, finding factors manually can be tedious and prone to error.

We built this tool to instantly generate a complete list of factors for any positive integer. It goes a step further by counting the total number of divisors and elegantly pairing them up, making it easier to understand how numbers multiply together to form your input value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a factor?

A factor (or divisor) of a number is an integer that can be divided into the number evenly, with no remainder. For example, 3 is a factor of 12 because 12 divided by 3 equals 4 exactly.

What are factor pairs?

A factor pair is a set of two numbers that, when multiplied together, result in the original number. For example, the factor pairs of 10 are (1, 10) and (2, 5).

Does every number have 1 as a factor?

Yes, every positive integer has at least 1 and itself as factors. If a number strictly greater than 1 has *only* 1 and itself as factors, it is called a prime number.

Can factors be negative?

Mathematically, yes. If 2 is a factor of 10, then -2 is also a factor because -2 × -5 = 10. However, in basic arithmetic and schooling, we usually only refer to the positive factors unless specifically asked for negative ones.

How is a factor different from a multiple?

A factor divides evenly into a number, whereas a multiple is the result of multiplying that number by an integer. For example, the factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, and 6, but its multiples are 6, 12, 18, 24, etc.

How do you find the greatest common factor (GCF)?

The GCF of two numbers is the largest factor that they both share. You find it by listing out the factors for both numbers and identifying the highest number that appears in both lists.

What is prime factorization?

Prime factorization is the process of breaking down a composite number into a set of prime numbers that, when multiplied together, equal the original number. Unlike standard factors, prime factors only include prime numbers.
