Golden Rules for French Days & Months

1. No Capital Letters

Unlike English, days of the week and months are lowercase in French: lundi (not Lundi), septembre (not Septembre), unless starting a sentence.

2. All Days & Months Are Masculine

Every day and month is masculine gender. You say le lundi, un beau vendredi, un froid mois de janvier.

3. "Le" vs No Article for Days

Saying lundi means "this coming Monday". Saying le lundi means "on Mondays" (habitual action): Je fais du sport le lundi.

4. The 1st of the Month Exception

The first day of any month uses the ordinal 1er (premier): le 1er mai. All other days use standard numbers: le 2 mai, le 15 août.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are days and months capitalized in French?

No. Unlike English where days (Monday) and months (January) are always capitalized, French uses lowercase letters: lundi, mardi, janvier, février. They are only capitalized when they start a sentence.

What preposition is used before months in French?

Use en directly before the month name (e.g. en mai, en octobre) or au mois de (e.g. au mois de mai). Never use "dans" or "à" for months.

How do you write the date in French?

French uses the Day-Month-Year format: le [day number] [month] [year]. Example: le 14 juillet 1789. The first day of the month is an exception: use 1er (premier), e.g. le 1er janvier.

What is the difference between "lundi" and "le lundi"?

Lundi refers to a specific coming Monday (e.g. J'ai un examen lundi = I have an exam this Monday). Le lundi refers to recurring Mondays (e.g. Le lundi, le musée est fermé = On Mondays, the museum is closed).

What are the grammatical genders of French days and months?

All 7 days of the week and all 12 months of the year are masculine in French. Any accompanying adjectives take the masculine form: un lundi pluvieux, un beau mois de mai.
