Understanding French Number Logic (Base-20 & Rules)
For English speakers, French numbers past 60 can feel like a mental math quiz. This is because French combines two mathematical counting systems: decimal (base-10) and vigesimal (base-20).
The Vigesimal (Base-20) System (70, 80, 90)
- 70 (soixante-dix) = 60 + 10 (Sixty-ten). 71 is soixante-et-onze (60 + 11).
- 80 (quatre-vingts) = 4 × 20 (Four-twenties). Notice the plural 's' at the end of vingts.
- 81 (quatre-vingt-un) = 4 × 20 + 1. The 's' is dropped because a number follows!
- 90 (quatre-vingt-dix) = 4 × 20 + 10 (Four-twenties-ten). 92 is quatre-vingt-douze (4 × 20 + 12).
Regional Variations: France vs. Belgium & Switzerland
- Belgium & Switzerland simplify 70 and 90: they use septante (70) and nonante (90).
- Switzerland also uses huitante (or octante in some cantons) for 80 instead of quatre-vingts.
- In Francophone Africa and Québec, Standard French (France) forms are primarily used.
Prior to 1990, hyphens were only used for numbers under 100 (e.g. twenty-one / vingt-et-un vs cent vingt). The 1990 Académie française reform recommended putting hyphens between all parts of a compound number (e.g. cent-vingt-trois). Both forms are accepted in modern writing.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you write 92 in French?
In French, 92 is written as quatre-vingt-douze. This literally translates to "four-twenties-twelve" (4 × 20 + 12 = 92). In Belgium and Switzerland, it is written as nonante-deux.
Why does 80 have an 's' (quatre-vingts) but 81 does not (quatre-vingt-un)?
In French grammar, vingt takes a plural 's' (quatre-vingts) when it is multiplied by a number and comes at the very end of the numeral. When followed by another number (like 81 = quatre-vingt-un or 82 = quatre-vingt-deux), the 's' is dropped.
What is the difference between "septante" and "soixante-dix"?
Both mean 70. Soixante-dix is used in Standard French (France, Canada, Francophone Africa). Septante is used in Belgian French, Swiss French, and parts of eastern France.
How do you turn a French number into an ordinal number (e.g. 1st, 2nd, 92nd)?
Except for "first" (premier / première), French ordinals are formed by adding -ième to the cardinal number. If the number ends in 'e', drop the 'e' first (e.g. quatre → quatrième, quatre-vingt-douze → quatre-vingt-douzième).
