Meme Culture & History
The term "Meme" was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene, describing an idea that spreads from person to person within a culture. Today, internet memes are the DNA of digital culture.
Evolution of Memes
From the "Dancing Baby" (1996) to "Doge" (2013) and modern surrealist humor, memes have evolved from simple email forwards to complex cultural signifiers. They are now a primary language for Gen Z and Alpha.
Copyright & Fair Use
Most memes fall under "Fair Use" as they are transformative parodies. However, using a meme for commercial advertising can sometimes lead to legal issues if the original image rights aren't cleared (e.g., "Success Kid").
