Microphone Decibel (dBFS) & Speech Level Guide
Digital audio measures loudness in dBFS (decibels relative to full scale), where 0 dBFS is the absolute digital maximum before distortion occurs. Use this benchmark table to optimize your microphone gain:
| Decibel Range (dBFS) | Sound Category | Status & Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to -3 dBFS | Digital Clipping & Peaking | Too Loud. Causes harsh clipping distortion. Lower your microphone gain or move back. |
| -6 to -12 dBFS | Optimal Speech Peaks | Perfect! Clean, punchy broadcast level used by streamers and podcasters. |
| -12 to -24 dBFS | Normal Conversational Voice | Ideal standard range for Zoom, Discord, Google Meet, and Skype meetings. |
| -24 to -36 dBFS | Quiet Speech / Distant Voice | Slightly low. Increase mic volume or reposition microphone closer to mouth. |
| < -45 dBFS | Ambient Room Noise Floor | Background silence, air conditioner hum, PC fan noise. Good noise floor. |
Troubleshooting Microphone Problems
If your microphone isn't responding or you're seeing zero volume in our mic test, follow these platform-specific fixes:
- Open Settings > System > Sound and verify your input device is selected.
- Check Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and ensure "Let apps access your microphone" is toggled ON.
- Click Device properties and raise the input volume slider to 80-100%.
- Disable "Exclusive Mode" in Advanced Sound Settings if Discord or games hog your mic.
- Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone.
- Ensure your web browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Brave) is granted permission.
- Navigate to System Settings > Sound > Input. Check the Input volume slider and speak to confirm the input meter registers sound.
- If using AirPods or Bluetooth headphones, ensure they are connected as an Input source.
- Look at the left side of your browser URL bar for the Padlock or Settings icon.
- Click it and make sure Microphone is set to Allow (not Block).
- If multiple microphones are plugged in, select the correct hardware in the tool's dropdown menu.
- Close background meeting tabs (Teams, Google Meet, Webex) that may have muted your stream.
