PowerPoint to Text
Extract slide text, order and presenter notes from a .pptx file, in your browser, with nothing uploaded.
Drop a PowerPoint file here and get its text back: every slide in order, with its presenter notes underneath when the file has them. A .pptx file is a ZIP archive of XML parts (Office Open XML, standardised as ISO/IEC 29500), and this tool unzips it in your browser, reads the text runs in each slide file, and joins them into plain text. Nothing is uploaded: the file never leaves your device. The older binary .ppt format is not a ZIP of XML, so it is not supported here.
One file at a time. Large decks work, but a deck with hundreds of slides or embedded media takes a few seconds to unzip.
Honest limits. This tool extracts text only: fonts, colours, layouts, animations, charts and embedded media are not carried over, and text inside a chart or a SmartArt diagram may come out in reading order rather than visual order. Text in images is not read: that would need OCR, which this tool does not do. Slide order comes from the slide number in the file name (slide1.xml, slide2.xml), which matches presentation order in decks saved by PowerPoint. Notes are matched to slides through the slide relationship files when they exist; when a deck has notes files but no relationship entries, the notes are listed after all slides with a note saying the match could not be verified.
What a .pptx file actually is
A .pptx file is not one opaque document. It is a ZIP archive holding a set of XML parts, following the Open Packaging Conventions of Office Open XML (ECMA-376, standardised as ISO/IEC 29500). Rename a copy to .zip and unzip it, and you see the structure: a [Content_Types].xml manifest at the root, ppt/presentation.xml describing the deck, one ppt/slides/slideN.xml file per slide, ppt/slideLayouts/ and ppt/slideMasters/ for the design, ppt/theme/ for colours and fonts, and ppt/media/ for embedded pictures and video. Slide text lives in the slide XML inside drawing-text paragraphs: each paragraph is an a:p element, each run of text inside it is an a:r element, and the characters themselves sit in a:t elements. Presenter notes live separately, in ppt/notesSlides/notesSlideN.xml, linked from the slide through a relationship file in ppt/slides/_rels/.
That structure is why this tool can run entirely in your browser. It unzips the file, sorts the slide parts by number, walks each slide XML paragraph by paragraph, and writes the a:t runs out in order, with a line break for each paragraph. The older .ppt format, used by PowerPoint 97 to 2003, is a binary OLE compound file, not a ZIP of XML, so it needs a different reader and this tool declines it plainly instead of failing halfway. The macro-enabled .pptm format shares the same ZIP structure, but this tool only accepts .pptx, because running macro content through a text extractor would be the wrong promise to make.
Slide order, and why it is trustworthy
PowerPoint writes slides as slide1.xml, slide2.xml and so on in presentation order, and the presentation part lists them in the same order. Sorting by that number therefore reproduces the order you see in the slide sorter. A deck hand-edited by another program could in theory number slides differently, but every deck saved by PowerPoint itself follows this rule.
Why nothing is uploaded
Decks often hold unreleased plans, salaries or client work. Unzipping and reading XML in the browser means the file is never sent anywhere, so there is no server copy to leak, and no retention policy to trust. If your deck is sensitive, this is the right shape of tool for it.
