How QR Codes Work
QR (Quick Response) codes are a type of matrix barcode invented in 1994. Unlike standard barcodes that store data horizontally, QR codes store data both horizontally and vertically, allowing them to hold over 100 times more information.
Anatomy of a QR Code
- Position Markers: The large squares in the corners helping scanners determine orientation.
- Data Modules: The smaller black and white squares encoding the actual text or URL.
- Error Correction: Redundant data allowing the code to be scanned even if up to 30% is damaged or covered (e.g., by a logo).
Static vs. Dynamic Codes
This tool generates Static QR Codes. The data is encoded directly into the pattern. They never expire and work without an internet connection (for text/wifi), but you cannot change the content after printing. Dynamic codes (offered by paid services) store a redirect URL, allowing you to change the destination later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do these QR codes expire?
No. Because they are static codes, they contain the data permanently. As long as your website URL is active, the QR code will work forever.
What is the minimum size for printing?
We recommend a minimum size of 2cm x 2cm (0.8 inch) for reliable scanning. If you add a logo or have a long URL (which makes the pattern denser), increase the size.
Can I invert the colors?
Technically yes, but many scanners struggle with light codes on dark backgrounds. For maximum compatibility, stick to a dark foreground (dots) on a light background.
