Understanding Similar Triangles

Similar triangles are triangles that have the same shape, but not necessarily the same size. This means their corresponding angles are equal, and the ratio of their corresponding side lengths is constant. This constant ratio is known as the scale factor.

Our similar triangle calculator uses this principle to find missing side lengths. Once the scale factor is established from a known pair of corresponding sides, it can be applied to any other known side to find its missing counterpart.

The Scale factor

The scale factor is the ratio of corresponding side lengths. For example, if Triangle 1 has a side of 3, and the corresponding side on Triangle 2 is 6, the scale factor from Triangle 1 to Triangle 2 is 2 (6 / 3 = 2).

Finding Missing Sides

Once you know the scale factor, finding a missing side is simple multiplication or division. Multiply a side from the first triangle by the scale factor to find the corresponding side on the second triangle.
