The Tetris Legacy

Tetris was created in 1984 by Soviet software engineer Alexey Pajitnov at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre of the Academy of Science of the USSR in Moscow. Inspired by a pentomino puzzle toy, Pajitnov simplified the blocks to four squares (tetrominoes) to create a game that has since become one of the most recognizable and successful video games of all time.

In a fierce bidding war during the Cold War, Tetris famously found its way out of the Soviet Union to become bundled with the original Nintendo Game Boy in 1989, cementing its place in gaming history.

The Tetris Effect

Playing Tetris has been shown to alter the brain. After prolonged sessions, players often report seeing falling shapes in the real world or in their dreamsβ€”a cognitive phenomenon aptly named the "Tetris Effect". It has also been studied for its potential to help prevent PTSD following traumatic events.
