Tips for Recognising Arabic Letter Shapes
1. Count the dots first
Many Arabic letters share the same body shape — dots (above or below) are what make them unique. Ba (ب), Ta (ت) and Tha (ث) are identical in shape; only their dot count differs (1 below, 2 above, 3 above).
2. Learn letter families
Arabic letters come in families sharing a base skeleton: ج/ح/خ · س/ش · ص/ض · ط/ظ · ع/غ · ر/ز · د/ذ. Mastering one family member makes the others much easier.
3. Notice the shape opening
Letters like ع (Ayn) and غ (Ghayn) have an open "eye" shape. Letters like م (Meem) have a closed loop. The direction the opening faces (left, right, down) is a reliable recognition cue.
4. Use the "Listen" button
Connect the visual shape to the sound right away. Research shows pairing auditory and visual input doubles retention speed — don't just read, listen every time you see a new letter.
