Understanding the ASRS-v1.1 Screener
The Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS-v1.1) is a screening questionnaire developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with Ronald C. Kessler, Ph.D. and colleagues at Harvard Medical School. Published in 2005, it is the most widely used adult ADHD screening instrument in both clinical and research settings.
The full ASRS contains 18 questions covering all DSM-5 criteria. However, research demonstrated that the first 6 questions alone (Part A) provide the highest predictive accuracy. This tool implements the validated Part A screener with Likert-based scoring.
Research Validation
Validated in a landmark 2005 study in Psychological Medicine (Kessler et al., 2005). The 6-question screener demonstrated sensitivity of 68.7% and specificity of 99.5%, outperforming the full 18-question version for initial screening. Cited in over 2,000 peer-reviewed publications.
Likert-Based Scoring
This tool uses the 0–24 Likert-based scoring developed by Ustün et al. (2017) which assigns 0–4 points per question. Research shows superior psychometric properties compared to the original dichotomous scoring. A score of ≥14 indicates further clinical evaluation is warranted.
What is ADHD?
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with daily functioning. It affects approximately 4.4% of adults worldwide and is recognized in both DSM-5 and ICD-11.
