Official Requirements for Doing an Ausbildung in Germany

Germany's dual education system (duales Ausbildungssystem) combines paid on-the-job company training with academic lessons at a vocational school (Berufsschule). For international candidates and non-EU citizens, requirements are regulated under the Skilled Immigration Act (Fachkräfteeinwanderungsgesetz - FEG) and §16a of the German Residence Act (AufenthG).

1. German Language Requirement (Sprachniveau)

Because vocational school exams (IHK / HWK) are conducted exclusively in German, employers and embassy visa officers strictly check your CEFR certificate. Official certificates accepted: Goethe-Zertifikat, telc, ÖSD, and TestDaF.

2. School Certificate Equivalence (Schulabschluss)

Legally under the BBiG, no specific school certificate is mandated. However, employers require at least a recognized 9th/10th grade completion (equivalent to Hauptschulabschluss or Realschulabschluss). You may need to verify your school leaving certificate on the official Anabin / ZAB database.

3. Is There an Age Limit for Ausbildung?

No! Under German law, there is **no maximum age limit** for entering an Ausbildung. Candidates in their 30s, 40s, or 50s regularly start retraining or career switches in Germany.

4. Visa & Financial Guarantee (§16a AufenthG)

Under §16a AufenthG, non-EU applicants must prove they can cover their living expenses (approx. €939/month net in 2025). Since most Azubi salaries exceed €950–€1,300 gross/month, **most international apprentices do NOT need a blocked account (Sperrkonto)**!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I apply for an Ausbildung from outside Germany?

Yes! Under the Skilled Immigration Act (FEG), non-EU citizens can apply directly to German employers online via platforms like Ausbildungsstelle.de, Make-it-in-Germany.com, or LinkedIn. Once you receive an apprenticeship contract (Ausbildungsvertrag), you can apply for an Ausbildung Visa (§16a AufenthG) at your local German embassy.

Is B1 German enough for an Ausbildung visa?

Legally B1 is the baseline minimum for an apprenticeship visa. However, sectors like Nursing and IT strongly prefer **B2** to handle technical vocational terminology and exams.

Do I need a university degree to start an Ausbildung?

No! An Ausbildung is designed after secondary school (10th or 12th grade). Having a university degree is not required, although candidates with degrees often get accepted faster or can shorten their Ausbildung duration from 3 years to 2 or 2.5 years.
