GTA 6 Is Region-Locked on PlayStation 5, Not Xbox
TL;DR
Physical copies of Grand Theft Auto VI for the PlayStation 5 are region-locked due to Sony's PSN policies. Xbox Series X and S physical copies are region-free. Here is how the activation rules work.

Why the PS5 version is locked
The retail boxes for GTA 6 do not contain game discs. Rockstar Games ships "code-in-a-box" products. You buy a plastic case that holds a 12-digit digital download code.
Sony strictly locks PlayStation Network (PSN) codes to specific geographic regions. If you buy a physical copy of GTA 6 in the United Kingdom, the download code inside will only work on a PSN account registered in the UK. If you try to redeem that code on a US-based PSN account, the PlayStation Store will reject it. You cannot bypass this by changing your console language or location settings. Your account region is permanent.
The Japan restriction
Buyers in Japan face a strict time limit. Due to local digital goods regulations, any physical download code for the PS5 version purchased in Japan expires exactly 170 days after the game launches.
If you buy a sealed copy from a Japanese retailer and leave it on a shelf for six months, the code becomes worthless. Rockstar cannot issue a replacement.
Why Xbox is different
Microsoft manages digital codes differently. The download code inside an Xbox physical copy of GTA 6 has no region restrictions.
You can buy the Xbox version in France and redeem the code on a US-based Xbox Live account. The Microsoft Store servers authenticate the purchase globally. The game downloads and plays normally.
How to buy the game safely
- PS5 owners: Buy physical copies only from retailers located in the same country as your PSN account.
- Xbox owners: Buy physical copies from anywhere. The code will work.
- Digital buyers: Buying directly through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store completely avoids the region-lock issue. The storefront automatically gives you the correct regional version.
