The Hebrew calendar is a lunisolar calendar, meaning months are based on the phases of the moon (29 or 30 days per month) while the years are aligned with the solar solar cycle. To keep holidays like Passover occurring in the spring season, an extra month (Adar I) is added 7 times in every 19-year Metonic cycle.
In Jewish tradition, days begin and end at sunset (specifically at tzeit hakochavim / appearance of stars), rather than midnight. Therefore, Shabbat and all Jewish festivals begin on the evening prior to the civil calendar date.
