Understanding the 2026 World Cup Format

The 2026 FIFA World Cup marks a historic expansion, welcoming 48 national teams for the first time. With 12 groups of four and a round of 32 before the quarterfinals, this tournament format ensures more competitive matches and gives smaller footballing nations their chance on the biggest stage.

Co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, the tournament spans 16 cities across three countries, making it the most geographically ambitious World Cup ever. Use this tracker to follow every group, fixture, and host city.

Group Stage

48 teams play in 12 groups of four. Each team plays three matches (one against each group opponent). The top two teams from each group, plus the eight best third-placed teams, advance to the knockout stage.

Knockout Stage

32 teams enter the single-elimination bracket. Matches are decided by extra time and penalty shootouts if needed. The knockout stage spans from the round of 32 through the final at MetLife Stadium on July 19, 2026.
