How Motorcycle Insurance Premiums Work
Motorcycle insurance in Spain is mandatory for all road-legal bikes. The premium depends on several factors including the rider's age and experience, the motorcycle's value and engine size, the type of coverage selected, and your claims history.
Insurers use a bonus-malus system: a clean claims record lowers your premium over time, while at-fault accidents push it up. Young riders and powerful bikes carry higher premiums because of statistically higher accident rates.
Coverage Types
Third Party is the legal minimum — it covers damage you cause to others. Third Party + Theft adds protection if your bike is stolen. Comprehensive covers everything including your own damage in an accident.
Bonus-Malus System
Each claim-free year earns a bonus discount. At-fault claims add a malus surcharge. After 5+ clean years, you can save up to 50% on your base premium with most Spanish insurers.
Engine Size Matters
Scooters under 125 cc are the cheapest to insure. Mid-range bikes (126–500 cc) are moderate. Sport and touring bikes above 750 cc carry the highest premiums due to speed capability and repair costs.
