Understanding the CC to HP Conversion
CC (cubic centimeters) measures the total displacement volume of an engine — the combined volume swept by all pistons during one complete cycle. Horsepower (HP), on the other hand, measures the actual power output of the engine. While the two are related, the conversion is not a fixed ratio because factors like engine design, fuel type, RPM, tuning, and compression ratio all affect how efficiently displacement translates into power.
The most commonly used rule of thumb is HP = CC ÷ 15, which comes from typical naturally-aspirated gasoline engines. High-performance engines can produce 1 HP per 12–14 CC, while older or low-RPM diesel engines may need 18–20 CC per HP. HP = CC ÷ CC-per-HP ratio
For a general engine: HP = CC ÷ 15.
Example: A 750 CC engine ≈ 750 ÷ 15 = 50 HP.
For a sport engine (14 cc/hp): 750 ÷ 14 ≈ 53.6 HP.

What Is Engine CC?
CC stands for cubic centimeters and describes the volume of the engine's cylinders. A larger CC means larger combustion chambers, which can burn more fuel per cycle and generally produce more power. Motorcycles typically range from 100–1800 CC, while cars range from 660 CC (kei cars) to over 6,000 CC (V8 muscle cars).
What Is Horsepower?
Horsepower is a unit of power that measures the rate at which work is done. One mechanical horsepower equals 745.7 watts. It was originally defined by James Watt to compare steam engine output to the work of draft horses. Today, it's the standard metric for rating car, motorcycle, boat, and lawnmower engine performance.
CC to HP Worked Examples
Example 1 — CC to HP: You have a 750 CC engine. Using the standard formula: HP = 750 ÷ 15 = 50 horsepower. If it's a high-performance sport engine (14 cc/hp): 750 ÷ 14 ≈ 53.6 HP.
Example 2 — HP to CC: You need an engine that produces 40 HP. Using the standard formula: CC = 40 × 15 = 600 CC. For a low-RPM diesel (20 cc/hp): 40 × 20 = 800 CC.
Example 3 — Motorcycle: A 600 CC sport bike with a tuned engine (12.5 cc/hp) produces approximately 600 ÷ 12.5 = 48 HP. In reality, modern 600 CC sport bikes can produce 80–120 HP due to advanced engineering — this calculator provides estimates, not dyno results.
