Why Censor Photos?

Sharing photos online is a normal part of modern life, but images can often contain sensitive personal information. License plates, facial features, home addresses written on mailboxes, or documents visible in the background are all data points that could be captured and misused if your photo is shared without caution.

This tool provides three censor algorithms — Pixelation, Blur, and Solid Color — each with different aesthetic results and use-cases. You can apply them interactively using either a rectangular or elliptical selection region, giving you maximum precision control.

Pixelate

Divides the selected region into large visible pixel blocks by down-sampling the area. Commonly used in journalism and photography to anonymize faces in news photography.

Blur

Applies a multi-pass Gaussian approximation blur that smooths all detail in the censored area into an unreadable smear. Ideal for text, addresses, and bank account numbers.

Solid Fill

Covers the entire selected area with a single opaque flat color (default: black). The most aggressive censoring method, making underlying pixels completely unrecoverable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Solid Color fill is mathematically unrecoverable — the original pixel information is permanently lost. However, Pixelation and Blur are theoretically susceptible to AI-based reconstruction attacks if the data was recoverable in the first place from block patterns. For highly sensitive content, we recommend using the Solid Color mode.
