The sign system this quiz drills

1. Shape tells you first. Texas signs follow the national shape code: octagon always means stop, an upside-down triangle means yield, a diamond warns, a pentagon marks a school zone, and an X marks a railroad crossing. On the real test, shape questions are free points if the code is automatic.

2. Color confirms it. Red is stop or prohibition, yellow is a general warning, orange is construction and work zones, green is guidance (directions, distances, exits), and blue points to motorist services.

3. Lines are signs too. The DPS test treats pavement markings as part of the sign system: yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions, white lines separate lanes moving the same way, solid lines restrict crossing, broken lines permit it when safe.

Why sign questions decide pass or fail

Sign and marking questions make up a large share of the Texas knowledge test, and they are the questions first-time applicants miss most — not because they are hard, but because most people study them as pictures to memorize instead of a code to learn. Learn the code (shape, then color, then wording) and an unfamiliar sign on test day becomes a sign you can decode on the spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many road sign questions are on the real Texas DPS test?

The official knowledge test has 30 multiple-choice questions drawn from the whole Texas Driver Handbook, and signs and signals are one of the heaviest sections. You need at least 21 correct (70%) to pass. This 12-question practice set targets the sign, shape, color and marking questions specifically.

What is the fastest way to tell what a sign means?

Read it in three steps: shape first (octagon = stop, inverted triangle = yield, diamond = warning, pentagon = school, X = railroad), color second (red = stop or do-not, yellow = warning, orange = work zone, green = guide), then the words or symbol. The code is national, so it works in every state, not just Texas.

Do pavement markings really count as test questions?

Yes. The handbook treats markings as traffic controls with the same legal weight as signs. Expect questions on double yellow lines (no passing from either side), broken white lines (lane changes allowed when safe) and edge lines. This quiz includes them on purpose.

What comes after the signs quiz?

The full Texas Driving Test: all 36 questions under exam timing, with a personalized answer key and a 20-page DPS study guide available for $4.99 if you want the deep review.

Cubbbix practice quizzes are independent study tools. They are not affiliated with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) or the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and passing a practice quiz does not guarantee passing the official knowledge test.
