The Science & Popularity of Tier Lists

Tier lists originate from fighting game communities (like Street Fighter and Super Smash Bros.) in Japan during the late 1990s. The letter "S" stands for "Shū" (秀), meaning exemplary, superior, or god-tier in Japanese academic grading.

S-Tier (God Tier)

Reserved for the undisputed best, overpowered, or essential items. Zero major flaws and universally top-rated.

A & B Tiers (Great / Good)

A-Tier: Very strong choices with minor drawbacks. B-Tier: Solid, reliable choices that balanced standard performance.

C, D & F Tiers (Average to Trash)

C-Tier: Average/situational. D/F Tiers: Underperforming, broken, or plain terrible choices.

Why Tier Lists Drive Engagement & Content Creation

Tier lists are opinionated, visual, and highly shareable. Creators on YouTube, Reddit, and Twitch frequently use tier lists to rank video games, tech products, movie franchises, and food chains because they spark vibrant community debates.
