CEFR Levels In Plain Words

CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, the scale that schools, employers and exam boards use worldwide. Here is what each level means in real life.

A1

Beginner

You can greet people, introduce yourself, read simple signs and menus, and answer basic questions about yourself.

A2

Elementary

You can handle travel basics: shopping, transport, hotels and simple directions, plus routine small talk about familiar things.

B1

Intermediate

You can travel on your own in the language, describe experiences and plans, and give opinions with reasons.

B2

Upper Intermediate

You can work in the language, argue a point, and follow complex text and conversation. This is the level many jobs and universities ask for.

C1

Advanced

You can study or work fully in the language, express yourself precisely, and handle long academic and professional texts.

C2

Proficient

You understand almost everything you read or hear and can express fine shades of meaning, close to a native speaker, in any setting.

Why Take a Language Test?

Five honest reasons a measured level beats a guess.

Know where you stand

Guessing your level can waste months on material that is too easy or too hard. A measured level tells you exactly what to study next.

Prepare before an official exam

Official exams like IELTS, TOEFL, DELF and the Goethe-Zertifikat cost real money and fixed dates. A free self-test first shows whether you are ready, or how far you still have to go. To be clear: Cubbbix tests are practice and self-assessment. They are not official exams and they do not replace official results.

For your CV and job applications

Writing "intermediate French" on a CV is a claim. A dated result with a verifiable certificate behind it gives an employer something concrete to check.

For study and immigration preparation

Many study places and immigration routes ask for a proven level, often B1 or B2. Testing yourself early shows whether your current level is enough before you pay official fees.

As a personal benchmark

A level is a baseline. Retake the test after a course or a few months of practice and measure the progress in numbers, not feelings.

What The Tests Cover

Every test checks the three skills that decide your real level:

Grammar

Tenses, sentence structure and the small rules that separate a beginner from an independent user.

Vocabulary

The everyday and advanced words each CEFR level expects you to know, in context rather than as lists.

Reading Comprehension

Short real texts with questions that test whether you understood the meaning, not just the words.

40 questions in every test, drawn from a large question bank.

Timed per question, so the result measures what you know on instinct, not what you can look up.

Instant result with your CEFR level and a score breakdown the moment you finish.

Free retakes as often as you like, with different questions from the bank.

Want a verifiable record of your result?

The test is free, and your result is free. If you want something you can show, the certificate is the paid extra. Here is what you get:

  • A PDF certificate with your name, your language and your CEFR level.
  • A unique verification ID and QR code. Anyone can check it on our verify page.
  • A detailed breakdown of your result, so you can see where you are strong and where you need work.
  • One price: $9.99, paid once. No subscription.

Cubbbix issues this certificate. It is not accredited and it is not an official qualification. It is a verifiable record of the level you reached in a Cubbbix test.

Preparation Tips

Small habits that move your score, before and during the test.

Test before you study

Your first result is your baseline. Knowing you are at A2, not B1, changes what you should practice.

Read the whole sentence first

Many wrong answers are familiar words placed in the wrong structure. The full sentence tells you which one fits.

Answer every question

The timer keeps moving. A reasoned guess scores better than a blank, and it keeps your rhythm.

Study your weak area first

Your result breakdown separates grammar, vocabulary and reading. An hour on your weakest skill moves your level fastest.

Practice a little every day

Reading and listening slightly above your level, even 15 minutes a day, builds the instinct the timed questions measure.

Book the official exam at the right moment

Once you are scoring at the level you need here, book the official exam and spend the remaining time on its format and timing.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Cubbbix issues the certificate and anyone can verify it online, but it is not accredited and it is not a government diploma. It does not replace a proctored exam such as IELTS, TOEFL or DELF where one of those is required.
CEFR is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. It grades language ability on one shared scale: A1 and A2 for beginners, B1 and B2 for independent users, and C1 and C2 for advanced users. Schools, employers and exam boards around the world use the same scale.
Most people finish a 40-question test in 5 to 10 minutes. Every question is timed, which keeps the result honest about what you know without thinking time.
The scoring looks at grammar markers and vocabulary range linked to CEFR levels. No online test is perfect, but the result gives a clear starting point and shows where to improve.
Yes. You can retake any Cubbbix test as many times as you like, free. The question bank is large, so you may see different questions on another attempt.
Every certificate carries a unique verification ID and a QR code. Anyone can enter the ID on the Cubbbix verify page and see the name, language and level recorded for that certificate.
Yes. The certificate is a verifiable record of your Cubbbix result, with your name, language, CEFR level, verification ID and QR code. Admission, immigration and employment decisions may still require a proctored exam from another provider.
Pick the language you are learning or plan to use. German has two options: the German Test is the full level test, and the German Placement Test (Deutsch Einstufungstest) is the placement version used to place learners into a course level.
The tests use general language and suit teenagers and adults. Younger children may find the intermediate and advanced vocabulary too abstract.
